Women – Divine yet Demeaned!!!

Women have to play many roles. And each of these roles interact with men in different ways. When she is born, she plays the role of a daughter. A cute little babe, who brings light to the household and more often than not, luck to the father. Growing up she becomes the girl who is expected to excel in studies to become an independent woman while at home she is expected to learn making a home and help her mother.

Once she has grown into a maiden, she has to deal with so many guys trying to vie for her. And if she falls in love with someone, then comes the dilemma and the tensions about the colony resident’s words, family’s feelings and the confusions of love and infatuation. Once she takes on the mantle of a wife and then a mother. Balancing between both these roles itself is a big management issue and over that if she is a working women, then the complications increase exponentially. (I think women don’t need to be trained in management, they can be given MBA degrees from birth.)

A girl listens to her heart until unless society forces her to listen to her mind instead. This makes her much more attuned to feelings and emotions. A girl’s actions are supposed to be governed by her emotions rather than by logical responses. And so, being more susceptible to love or even a show of love, she is purer of heart than most men even since childhood.

And yet, women have always been mistreated in every age by too many people. From Sita being abducted to girls being raped in the recent past, girls are being abused a lot. Are men becoming as raw and ruthless as an Asura? At least Raavan and the other Asuras prayed to Lord Shiva. But the actions of men now are becoming so demonic that even the Asuras of the past would feel ashamed of being compared with today’s men.

During the Vedic age, more than 3,000 years ago, women were assigned a high place in society. They shared an equal standing with their men folk and enjoyed a kind of liberty that actually had societal sanctions. The ancient Hindu philosophical concept of 'Shakti', the feminine principle of energy, was also a product of this age. This took the form of worship of the female idols or goddesses.

After worming through lots of books in various fields, I have a feeling that even ancient Indians were completely mired in confusion regarding women and their treatment. The confusion extends even up to the Vedas where we have guidelines teaching us to consider women as divine and worship them in one place while asking men to stay away from women while in penance, considering women impure in that instance. How could something be divine and impure too is one thing I have never understood.

The savage act of rape became prominent in India only after the British and other outsiders, mainly due to the armies which raped every women they found in the villages they won from their enemies. But I have not found any citations as such of Indian soldiers also being this animalistic except for in mythological stories where Asuras form the bulk of the perpetrators. Because even then, there were many strictures that stopped men from committing atrocities like that against the female gender.

Since the Delhi incident, I see many posts on Facebook condemning the Indian government for being so compassionate upon culprits of rape incidents. When compared with other countries, India ranks 2nd in the number of rapes committed. As such, the Indian government has delayed far too much in taking stringent actions on the assaulters.

But is either life imprisonment or death the right punishment for such people? I disagree. Death for people like the accused for the Delhi incident is more of an escape from punishment. And after the life imprisonment, there is no guarantee that the guy won’t go back to the same way of life he lived before.

My opinion, the victim is the right person to decide the punishment for such criminals. Indian women’s compassion sometimes amazes me so much. I have heard of many stories where the victim just wants to marry the accused and leave it. But even in such cases, the couple should be kept under legal observation for a stipulated amount of time to make sure the girl is not victimized even more.

But if the victim is dead, in that case, the criminal should be transformed into a eunuch and put on display as they used to display corpses in the olden ages.  If the victim was ravaged like the Delhi incident with torture, then the same should be done to the criminals in public. There would be many who might condone this as too much to do in public. But in these days, people only learn by example. And doing it in public might put enough fear in a tentative criminal that at least one hypothetical victim is saved.

This seems to me as the only way India can curb the rape cases and restore the respect and divine position women once had in its history.

If you can't worship women as you are supposed to, at least have the civility to treat them with the respect due to them!

Update as on 5th May, 2013 11:31AM:

One of my readers rightly pointed out that the punishment I proposed was a horrific way to teach people the value of women. But normally, it is the fear of retribution that forces men to act "civilized". Unfortunately, in India, this fear has become non-existent with respect to women. So when the law is not able to strike this fear into men, this sort of horrific examples are needed to strike fear in their hearts.

Due to the Jalianwala Bagh Incident and all thanks to the British, we Indians have learnt the value of life the hard way. But now, we need to relearn the importance of women. The Delhi Incident has opened doors for that. But to keep the demons away from women, such examples are necessary. And so, in my opinion, this is the right path.

A well written article with nice presentation style. But there can be some other view points to the historical observations such as about the state of woman in Vedic period and the Colonial Rule. In my knowledge, since the beginning of patriarchy in the society woman has been exploited by all the forces in power during war and peace. However the article is essentially humanistic and appreciable for its intent for social justice.
Not just India, Anon. Every country has turned that way. Everywhere only the fear of punishment is forcing men to be "civilized". In India, this fear has come down all thanks to corruption. So when law is not able to strike fear in mind, such horrific examples are needed to strike fear in the heart.

Indians understand the value of life all thanks to the British and the Jalianwala Incident. But we still need to learn the value of women. And the Delhi incidents have already started teaching that. What we need now is to strengthen that with fear. And so, in my opinion, this is the right path.

Of course, your idea is excellent. But how far law will ensure. To bring fearness in ones, law is not only tool. The india is a ethical country, whereas, a system of customs quite opposite to the western customs. If the Indian families, are able to give proper guidence to their children by teaching morals and customs of an Indians and their values, definitely it will be controlled within 5 to 8 years. Even Media is more highly effective on the exposing the women as attractive figures, by which, gents, getting tempted and doing such mistakes, without knowing consequences. Even if punishment, proposed by you, also implemented, it will be further more. why because, Media made people like that. So, I strongly propose, religious systems & customes, followed in ancient era are more sutiable, for, ex. girls should not be at full liberty, when they go to college or school , they should be back to home before it becomes dark. Wearing of proper dresses, Sharing of their views in a well disciplined manner by maintening the certain distance, doing frinedship with certain limitation etc. Since days are changed, as media says, girls also equal to the males in every fields, it does'not mean that, they simply ignore all above. So, at conclusion, these rape cases, can be controlled, only when, ladies and their parents really understand their liberty and security by balancing their enjoyable life.

In addition to the above, some external force is must to give support to them and their parents. That responsibility is held on the shoulder of the Govt, that how seriously they are able to implement the laws. In this case, if One Rapist is caught, red handed, he should not be given death penalty, he should be punished such a way that, part of the body to be removed immediately, for which he has tried. so, that life long he should penalize, by missing of that part.

At the same time, there are chance of taking advantage of the law, by the ladies also, for that, also alternative, and same type of punishment is preferred. We should not take guarantee, that ladies only fair, and gents only do this non sense.
Thereare, ladies, who take this advantage, and do business, by chance, they caught, and they take chance of this, for question of prestiage in the society.

At conclusion, over and above, one should control their own family, as such one should take care his own health.
In the first part of your comment, you seem to be targeting women completely. But there are many customs that the men should also have followed. And these are being missed out too. How can one expect only girls to follow customs while men make fun of it. There were many injunctions and principles followed in the ancient era that can not cope in this era. Many of them would be outright absurd and completely unacceptable too.

I agree that such a law as I proposed would give women an advantage that would make them too powerful. But at least a few instances of real criminals should dissuade men from committing such atrocities. Then maybe it can go back to normal. Particularly the Delhi Incident case needs special, outright and horrific punishment for their deaths than simple death.

So yes, a few of the ancient principles should be brought back. But in both genders, not just in women...
You have performed a fantastic job on this topic!
I did the best I could..
Thank you...

Ravings of a Frustrated Student...

"Mummy, mummy, may I go for Cricket???" These were the words uttered by Ravi, the only son in an Indian Middle Class Family, a tenth class student. His Mom replied, "What? Again Cricket!!! You were playing cricket the whole of morning. Even yesterday, you played the whole day. Isn't that enough???" As if all the elements were against him today, his Dad enters the room at the same time. He looks at Ravi and says, "Look, son! Your 10th class is a most important milestone in your life. If you clear your 10th with flying colors, your life is as good as settled. So just work hard for these exams and after the exams you can enjoy as much as you want!!" On hearing his father explaining to him in such comforting and soothing words, Ravi feels the importance of his studies and studies hard for his 10th... To his credit, he clears his 10th with such a high score that he can be counted among the best students in his school. I am sure, most of us have gone

I Found Her!!!

Late… Again late… Man, this had become a habit with me… If my dad knew that I was reaching the Station exactly about 5 mins before scheduled departure, he would give me a piece of his mind for sure. I checked the platform number and ran into the station huffing like a bull. Finding S8, I jumped onto the stairs and pushed through the people, waving away at their families, searching for my seat. A small wave of relief swept through me when I sat down in the window seat allocated to me. Of all the berths in the train, I always liked and preferred the Side Lower Berth as it gave me a kind of freedom. Noticing that the seat before me was empty, I wondered who could be sitting with me through this journey and how they might be. Train journeys always gave me a new experience as I got to meet new people. Sometimes, I tend to ignore everyone if I don’t like them much. But today, I didn’t have a novel and I had lost my earphones recently. Thus, I had no other way to pass my time except
